A library that works as a lantern. By day its perforated brick screen filters sunlight over the reading rooms, and after dark the whole building glows softly, giving the street a reason to slow down.
Context
The neighborhood library had been closed for years, and the trust that runs it had a tight budget and a corner site facing a busy avenue. It needed to feel welcoming to children, students, and older residents alike, and to be visible from the street at all hours.
Large glass walls were the obvious answer, but they bring glare, heat, and little privacy for readers.
Concept
We wrapped the building in a screen of perforated brick, laid by local masons in a pattern that thickens toward the floor and opens toward the ceiling. During the day it filters sunlight into soft, dappled reading rooms. After dark the pattern reverses, and the library glows from within like a lantern.
Inside, a double-height reading hall anchors the plan, with quieter rooms and a children’s room arranged around it. The building now stays open into the evening, and the street outside feels safer because of it.
Materials & Sustainability
The perforated screen is built from locally fired brick laid by hand, giving the library a durable skin that needs almost no maintenance. Its depth shades the glass behind it, reducing cooling demand through New York’s humid summers.
Inside, exposed concrete, oak shelving, and recycled-paper acoustic panels keep the palette simple. A rooftop solar array and high-performance glazing help the building use about 40 percent less energy than a typical library of its size.
