A tower that responds to the sun rather than resisting it. A slow twist in the facade cuts solar gain by 35 percent and gives every floor its own view across the Dubai skyline.
Context
Office towers in Dubai are often sealed glass boxes that depend heavily on air conditioning. Atlas Group wanted a landmark for DIFC that would stand out on a crowded skyline and still meet demanding energy targets.
Solar gain was the main issue. Every degree of heat that enters the facade has to be removed again, and over the life of a tower that adds up.
Concept
The tower rotates gently as it rises, a turn of a few degrees per floor. The twist creates self-shading fins and deep reveals on the sunniest sides, cutting solar gain by 35 percent compared with a conventional curtain wall of the same size.
The same geometry gives every floor a distinct view and a slightly different floor plate. At the base, a shaded public arcade and a sky garden on the 24th floor give tenants and visitors places to pause outside the air-conditioned core.
Materials & Sustainability
The twisting facade uses unitized glass panels with ceramic frit and integrated aluminum fins, tuned floor by floor to the sun path. Prefabricated modules sped up installation and kept the site cleaner and safer.
Chilled-beam cooling, a district cooling connection, and a sky garden with native planting help the tower earn a top-tier green rating. Regional stone lines the public arcade at the base.
