Architecture, interior design, and passive cooling strategy.

A family home that stays cool without leaning on machines. Rammed earth walls, a central courtyard, and deep shade work together, making the hottest months of the Pune year feel calm, quiet, and surprisingly gentle.

Context

Pune’s summers are long and hot, and the family wanted to live comfortably without running air conditioning all day. The plot is modest and overlooked on two sides, which limited the usual tricks of orientation and cross-ventilation.

They also wanted a home with a sense of weight and calm, built from materials that feel honest and age well, not a glass box that needs constant mechanical help to stay livable.

Concept

The house is organized around a central courtyard that works as the building’s lung. Walls of rammed earth, made from soil excavated on site, absorb heat during the day and release it slowly at night. Deep verandas and a planted courtyard shade the glazing and cool the air before it enters the rooms.

The result is a home that stays several degrees cooler than its surroundings with only ceiling fans for most of the year. Inside, the earth walls give each room a soft, mineral warmth that photographs never quite capture.

Materials & Sustainability

The walls are rammed from soil excavated during foundation work, stabilized with a small amount of lime and compacted in layers by local craftspeople. Very little material left the site, and almost none had to be brought in.

Deep verandas, a planted courtyard, and cross-ventilated rooms handle the cooling, and rooftop solar covers most of the household’s electricity. Reclaimed teak doors and lime plaster finishes keep the palette warm and low-maintenance.
